identification

On one of our mini-adventures along the beach this week we picked up a bunch of shells. For lack of anywhere else to safely stow them away, they got put in my hat.

We are big on the natural world out here and Jed has been able to identify our most common native birds since before he was two. Those of you who have been here awhile know that bugs and other critters get a fair amount of attention but it is only recently I bought us seashore and seashell identification guides. Which is kinda weird, because we live by the beach, but anyway, better late than never. We had a fine ole time identifying our stash of shells. That spiral you see? It's actually the inner flotation device of a kind of deep water squid! How cool is that?! Almost as cool as looking at a sample of our black sand under the microscope. I love homeschooling.
